Genealogy – Know Your Family Tree

Genealogy is defined as the study of your family roots.  For most people, they are not happy with just knowing who they are. They tend to yearn to learn about their roots and where their family came from. The reason behind this is that there are limitless possibilities to who your ancestors were. For example, your great grandparents might have been a knight from the Middle Ages or someone important during the revolution.

You can find anything on the internet nowadays, and the good thing is that when you are searching for genealogy, there are already sites specifically set up for that kind of research.

Online, you can look up various data such as marriage licenses, birth or death certificates, military records, census records, wills, and even old tax information.  But you must know exactly who you are searching for. This is because the tricky thing with trying to research your family history online is filtering out which ones really are your relatives.  It can be very hard to imagine how many people share the same names or may have very similar names of your past relatives.

What you should do in these cases is to ask your relatives first some bits and pieces of your past history, this will help you fill in the gaps for your research to be more accurate.  Another great thing about the internet is that the sites already uploaded tons of records from the past to present.  In fact, you can sometimes find records of your ancestor’s trip to various places all over the world.

Another great place to search for information about your genealogy is the local court house. Similar to genealogy websites, you will be able to find marriage licenses, birth or death certificates, or divorce records. Alternatively, you can also find records through your state department which can contain the missing links to other information that you already have.

The study of your genealogy can be considered as a hobby that is rewarding not only for the person who is doing the work but to the other family members and future generations to come.  Just imagine how great it will be to always stay updated to the direction where your whole family line is going for the next hundred years or so.
