The Difference Between Interior Decorating and Interior Design

In the field of home planning and home building, the terms “Interior Decorating” and “Interior Design” quite often get confused as being and viewed as being one in the same.

Both may sound similar in nature but they are 2 completely different trades which require discintively different skills.

Interior design requires a tradesmen to have the the understanding of size dimensions of a room, light, and the objects which will be placed in the interior environment. Additionally he or she also takes into consideration a persons psychological well being and safety while occupying a living space for the most in comfort.  Interior designers often work closer with an architect to devise the concept and organization of rooms within a house or commercial space.

An Interior Decorator is a trades person who now takes an empty room and fills it with objects and colours.  The interior decorator does take into account the size of the rooms, and how much space it aloted to organize furnishings such as tables, chairs, couches, kitchen appliances, entertainment units and so on.   He or she also has a flair for understanding matching colors and textures for walls, and flooring to allow the occupants the most in comfort and safety.

Interior design and decorating can be learned by attending college.  Schools such as The Art Institute of Vancouver offer classes which give students access to the latest in computer technology with MAC Labs to attain the skills to then further into a career in the field.

Interior design and interior decorating are both crucial to a home owners enjoyment of their surroundings.  Before the decorating comes the design, but both have the goal of giving the maximum in comfort.
