Free Browser MMO Economics

Now sure we are all familiar with the more popular aspects of the Free Browser MMO and other Free Online Role Playing Games such as… killing, leveling up, acquiring better gear, etc. In case you are not familiar with this genre of game, I will briefly summarize the concept of the MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game), or MMO for much shorter.

I mentioned earlier leveling up; generally you start off in a Free Browser MMO as a level one beginner or “noob”. At this point in the game you will have inferior or no equipment at all and you are essentially a nobody. As you begin exploring the world in whatever fashion that particular games allows, whether it be graphical or text-based, you will find enemies to kill. Typically when you kill an enemy, you will receive experience or “XP” which once you reach your maximum amount, you then level up one level and start back at 0 XP. As you level up, you will find stronger enemies to kill, yielding greater and more valuable items or simply more cash XP. This allows you to explore more difficult and cooler areas of the Free Browser MMO. Sounds fun right? It is, and very, very addictive.

Basically thats a Free Browser MMO for ya. One thing I left out was the whole “MMO” part. Not only do you get to to engage in strange, new, imaginative worlds, you also get to do it with real people online! You can kill peoples characters across the world! In the more advanced Free Browser MMO games you are able to party up with your friends and actually work together to complete common goals.

OK, now to the point. The economics of a Free Browser MMO. This is more complicated than one would think. In games that support open trade markets, things can get very much likely a real economy, and if the game admins and even players aren’t careful the in game economy can emulate the real economy (American at least) and begin to collapse.

There are quite a few ways money (in game money, not real) can circulate in a Free Browser MMO. This money is given in exchange for selling the items that players accumulate as they progress in the game. Money can sometimes be given as a reward for quests or even just killing enemies. In some games money can also be stolen from other players! Players will often kill as many enemies they can to get as many valuable item as they can get their hands on and sell them to wither in game merchants for modest return or trade with other players.

If the admins of the game set the price or the value of an item too high or low, things can get real bad, real quick. I’ve seen situations where players will have hundreds of useless items, the admins will raise value for whatever reason and that player will make an immediate fortune, while possibly reseting the value of the item later. This sort of thing is the kind of thing to watch out for in a game you are playing. If you see high market fluctuations be weary or your money vault and item inventory!
