Having a baby and being a new parent can be a daunting time. Newborn babies take a lot of hard work, lots of sleepless nights and can cost the earth in more ways than one.
We all want the best for our children and most of us ensure they have everything they need to grow up healthily. And raising children is no longer the demanding task it was for our grandparents with so many innovations and technologies to help us along the way.
But are all these modern methods really best for our children, us and the environment?
Take disposable nappies. Using disposables saves us a lot of hard work, or so we suppose, but are washable nappies really that much of a chore? They can certainly cost a lot less financially with the costs of an average baby’s nappies running in to several thousands of pounds before they are potty trained and what happens to all those disposables? Most, end up on landfill and as they take a long time to degrade they linger in the environment.
Washable nappies are far more environmentally friendly. Of course, you need to use the washing machine but with modern but if the temperature is kept low and the amount of detergent used is kept to a minimum the environmental benefits can almost match the financial savings.
There are other ways we can help the planet when as we are bringing up baby. Using sustainable and recyclable materials for babies clothing can help the planet. Don’t forget, children grow incredibly fast so they never stay in the same clothes for too long. An organic baby grow or a Bamboo bib or bamboo vest are just as comfortable and soft but will help to ensure your baby isn’t damaging the environment.
