It Takes a Special Person to Own and Care for Horses

Not everyone has what it takes to care for a horse. The amount of work involved in managing the day to day activities of a horse can be overwhelming for most normal people. That’s why people who choose to own horses are special. They have decided to make the necessary sacrifices to see to it that their horse lives a long and healthy life.

Owning a horse can be both tedious and expensive. It also means a lot of time and effort. Horses need to be washed, groomed and exercised. They need to be fed the right kinds of feed and given the proper equine supplements in order for them to meet their daily nutritional requirements. Horses must also have their stables cleaned and maintained to prevent injuries and diseases. It takes a special person to willingly choose to care for a horse.

The most important aspect of caring for a horse is obviously its health. You want to be sure this is always your main focus. Horses require lots of food, water, and exercise. They are big, muscular animals and thus needs large amounts of nutrition. Horses can be very active in when they are at play. This means they burn lots of energy in a day. They need to be given the nutrition they need and this is done through grass in the pasture, hay or feed. Ask a veterinarian about what types of feeds would be best for your horse as well as the types of equine supplements which would be most beneficial.

I like to feed my horses about three times a day when they are kept in their stalls for extended periods of time. However, when they can spend most of the day in the pasture I feed them a little bit less only because they can graze on grass whenever they feel like it. Also keep water readily available at all times. I keep mine in troughs around the stable area as well on the outskirts of the pasture. This way they can take a drink whenever they want. A dehydrated horse can be a risk for serious problems such as colic.

In regards to what kinds of equine supplements to use, I give my horses soluble vitamins and minerals. I also mix them in with the feed but I know some horse owners who mix it in with the drinking water. While horses do possess good immune systems, they still can get sick or suffer from issues such as influenza.
